Spending just 24 hours in Hobart sounded rushed when I first planned it. Tasmania’s capital has that laid-back charm that makes you want to slow down and stay at least a week. But with a bit of planning, I managed to spend my day with good food, great views and a bit of old-school magic. Here’s exactly what I did.
Breakfast at Battery Point
I started my morning in Battery Point for breakfast. Being one of Hobart’s oldest and prettiest neighbourhoods, it felt like stepping into a small English village. Narrow streets, tiny cottages and white picket fences, with a hint of sea breeze.
I grabbed breakfast at a local cafe and kept it fairly simple as I had a feast planned for lunch. Strong coffee, avo on toast with a side of bacon (of course). It was a relaxing start to my day, sitting by the window and watching locals walk their dogs and chat.
After eating, I wandered around for a bit, exploring the quiet streets before heading to the harbour.
A Seafood Seduction Lunch Cruise
Now this was the highlight of my day: The famous seafood seduction lunch cruise! I’d heard a lot about this experience out of all the Hobart cruises and I’m glad that I booked it. We boarded the boat and cruised out into the clear Tasmanian waters. The crew were friendly and down-to-earth, explaining everything and keeping it fun! Then the magic started.
We kicked things off with Tassie oysters that were shucked right in front of us. Then one of the crew members dived into the water and harvested fresh sea urchin and abalone! We had them so many different ways. Being a seafood person, it was honestly such a luxurious experience, especially after the “appetizers” we had huge Tasmanian Rock Lobsters and sashimi too. It was clean, sweet and completely different from anything I’ve had before.
We were anchored in a calm bay and enjoyed every mouthful with incredible coastal views all around us. The seafood seduction cruise was so special that I left full, happy and slightly sunburnt!
An Evening Movie At State Cinema
Since the cruise ended around 5pm, I headed back to my accommodation to freshen up and then continue on my one day in Hobart exploration after the sun went down. I made my way to the iconic State Cinema in North Hobart. When people talk about “classic” things to do in Hobart, this place always comes up and now I understand why.
This isn’t your typical modern multiplex. It has character. The building is somewhat nostalgic in the best way with comfy seats and a cosy atmosphere. I bought a ticket for the next show, grabbed some obligated popcorn and settled into my seat. It felt good to sit back and watch a movie after the indulgent lunch. And by the time the end-credits rolled, it was again time for some food!
Late Night Eats At Franko Night Market
To wrap up the night, I headed to the night market at Franklin Square. The place was buzzing with food stalls, music and hundreds of fairy lights.
I walked around for a bit before deciding what to eat. There were dumplings, burgers, curries, desserts and pretty much anything else you can think of. I opted for a handsome plate of street-style noodles with a soda and found a spot to eat. It was the perfect casual ending to my day.
With just 24 hours, I barely scratched the surface of all that Hobart offers, but between the charming streets, an unforgettable seafood packed lunch and the classic old-school vibe, I feel like I experienced a real slice of the city.
